Why We Became a PHIUS Certified Builder

At Legacy Mountain Builders, we’ve spent over 25 years walking alongside people as they worked to create homes that reflect their values. In the Ozarks and beyond, we’ve watched families try everything—cob homes, straw bale, rammed earth, papercrete, and even earthships—in pursuit of a home that was both sustainable and debt-free. We’ve admired their determination. We’ve seen their hard work. But we’ve also witnessed, time and again, how difficult these paths can be.

Finding A Better Way To Build

Many of these alternative construction methods are incredibly labor-intensive. They often require specialized skills or endless hours of physical labor. In some cases, it’s nearly impossible to insure or finance these kinds of homes, leaving families to pour their life savings—and their sweat equity—into something that’s difficult to finish or sell. More often than not, these efforts start with passion and purpose but end with exhaustion and financial strain.

We knew there had to be a better way.
A way to honor the heart behind these builds—the desire for energy efficiency, affordability, and sustainability—without sacrificing stability, safety, or long-term viability.

That’s when we discovered the Passive House approach and PHIUS (Passive House Institute US) certification.

What is the Passive House Approach?

Here was a building standard that focused on high-performance homes that are extremely energy-efficient, comfortable, and durable—but could be built with conventional materials and common-sense construction practices. It was an incredible solution for the families we care about:

  •  A home that saves thousands on energy bills over its lifetime
  • A structure that can be insured and financed through traditional means
  • A design that offers superior indoor air quality, comfort, and resiliency
  • And above all, a sustainable way to build that’s good for the planet, without being out of reach.

We became a Certified Passive House Builder through PHIUS because we believe this method strikes the balance so many people are searching for. You can have an affordable, energy-efficient, high-performance home—one that works for your family and your future. You don’t have to go it alone, and you don’t have to risk everything to have a home that aligns with your values.

For us, Passive House is more than a certification. It’s a way to serve our neighbors here in Douglas and Ozark counties—from Ava to Gainesville, Theodosia, and beyond—by helping them build homes that are practical, sustainable, and enduring.
It’s a win-win-win for finances, comfort, and the planet.
